What do I need my BMI Be?
It is believed that the "healthy weight" category--defined as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9--is considered to be the ideal. But remember that BMI isn't a perfect measure. It depends. BMI also can't tell the proportion of your weight comes comprised of muscle or fat therefore it doesn't provide information that is crucial to assess your health risks. For instance, athletes might have the highest BMI due to their muscle mass, even if they're not obese. The definitions used for the weight classes were based primarily on white populations, meaning they may not be as accurate for other races and ethnicities.
What is the effect of age or race impact BMI?
BMI doesn't differentiate between fat, bone and muscle, so it could be inaccurate for older individuals, who tend to lose muscle mass and density as they get older. (That's why those over 65 could benefit from a slightly higher BMI somewhere between 27 and 25.) Research suggests how the BMI measure of overweight overestimates the risk for Black people and underestimates risk in individuals who are of Asian heritage, which could cause ineffective treatment and health disparities.
Are BMI recommendations identical for men and women?
The amount of body fat varies for men and women. For women, the ideal body fat should be between 20 and 21 percent. (The the average American woman has between 22 to 25 percentage body fat.)
